Chinese Culture Week 2026 Opens in Edinburgh with Historic Partnership
A landmark Memorandum of Understanding between ICI and Edinburgh Fringe Society marks a new era of strategic cultural partnership.
Edinburgh, Scotland — On 9 August 2026, Chinese Culture Week (CCW) officially opened at the historic Merchant's Hall in Edinburgh, marking the start of a month-long celebration of Chinese arts and culture during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The opening ceremony witnessed a milestone moment: the Intercultural Connections Initiative (ICI) and the Edinburgh Fringe Society formally signed a long-term Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), establishing a stable and deep strategic partnership to build a new authoritative platform for cross-cultural exchange and international artistic co-creation.
The ceremony gathered distinguished guests from Edinburgh's civic, cultural, educational, and business sectors, alongside international partner organisations, renowned artists, and industry supporters. Edinburgh Lord Provost Robert Aldridge, Chinese Consul General in Edinburgh Zhang Biao, Edinburgh Fringe Society Chief Executive Tony Lankester, and ICI President Wen Wen all addressed the audience, jointly witnessing the deepening collaboration between two major cultural platforms to support the professional, sustainable, and internationalised presence of Chinese culture on the world stage.
Forging Long-term Strategic Cooperation
The most significant outcome of the opening ceremony was the official long-term partnership between ICI and the world's largest arts festival — the Edinburgh Fringe Society. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishes a sustainable strategic framework that creates a permanent channel for Sino-British cultural exchange.
Tony Lankester, Chief Executive of the Edinburgh Fringe Society, highlighted the value of this partnership in his address. He noted that the Edinburgh Fringe brings together the world's finest artistic talent and has long sought out and embraced outstanding Chinese artistic works. This deep strategic collaboration with ICI will open smoother pathways for Chinese contemporary art, intangible cultural heritage, and original productions to reach international audiences.
ICI President Wen Wen reflected on the four-year journey of deep collaboration between the two organisations. She emphasised that this MOU signing marks the transition from "project-based collaboration" to "strategic co-construction". Looking ahead, both parties will deliver joint artistic projects, two-way cultural promotion initiatives, and international artist support programmes — enabling Chinese traditional culture and contemporary cutting-edge art to flourish in the UK through mutual empowerment.
Chinese Culture Immerses Edinburgh
The ceremony welcomed guests from Edinburgh's established cultural institutions, universities, local government, leading enterprises, and the arts industry. Following the formal proceedings, the venue transformed into an immersive Chinese cultural experience space, thoughtfully curated to showcase the essence of Chinese traditional culture alongside contemporary artistic innovation, allowing international guests to experience the allure of Chinese aesthetics first-hand.
The event featured a striking contemporary interpretation of Sichuan face-changing (Bian Lian), cross-cultural musical performances, and a traditional cultural market experience zone with calligraphy and tea ceremony, intangible heritage crafts, and traditional Chinese games presented in rotation — a multi-dimensional showcase of Chinese culture's inclusivity and unique charm that won high praise and enthusiastic acclaim from international guests.
Meanwhile, the festival's thematic photography exhibition "From Taishan to the World" made its public debut at the opening ceremony. The exhibition focuses on the contemporary inheritance and innovative development of traditional culture, exploring how traditional culture finds new expression in the modern era, embodying the core philosophy of "upholding integrity while innovating, reaching out to the world".
In terms of stage programming, this year's Chinese Culture Week presents a diverse selection of high-quality co-productions spanning intangible heritage innovation, mythological reinterpretation, science-fiction theatre, Chinese-style dance, and traditional opera innovation — telling Chinese stories through an international artistic language, with performances rolling out throughout the August Fringe period, continuously showcasing the allure of Chinese culture.
Culture as a Bond, Warmth Across Borders
This year's Chinese Culture Week upholds the philosophy of "cultural exchange, shared public good", actively practising international social responsibility. The opening ceremony featured a special charity raffle, with all proceeds donated in full to Edinburgh's One City Trust charitable foundation, specifically supporting local community development projects in Edinburgh.
The charitable initiative received strong support from partners across sectors: Hainan Airlines sponsored international round-trip air tickets as raffle prizes, while numerous organisations, philanthropists, and volunteers participated enthusiastically — ensuring cultural exchange extends beyond artistic dissemination to embrace the warmth of public good.
The evening concluded with all guests, performers, volunteers, and partners joining together to sing "Auld Lang Syne", the familiar melody sealing the friendship between China and the UK and embodying the beautiful essence of cross-cultural integration.
Chinese Culture Week 2026 runs throughout August, building on the new partnership platform with the Edinburgh Fringe Society to present a continuous programme of curated performances, thematic exhibitions, artistic workshops, and cultural exchange salons.
Going forward, ICI will take this strategic partnership as a new starting point, continuing to deepen its work in Sino-British cross-cultural exchange, integrating premium artistic resources from China and abroad, and building a sustainable, professional, and internationalised cultural communication platform — enabling more of China's outstanding culture and young artistic talent to reach the world stage, so the world may see a diverse, vibrant, and innovative contemporary China.
