Review

Youth and Poetry – The Book of Songs stands out at this year’s IC Awards for its remarkable ability to fuse tradition and modernity, culture and growth, innocence and artistry.

Rooted in The Book of Songs, China’s earliest anthology of poetry, the production does not simply recreate the classics. Instead, the children of QFunTheatre reselect and reinterpret fourteen poems that resonate with their own lives—friendship, freedom, dreams, dilemmas, and uncertainties. These verses become not only cultural heritage but also reflections of contemporary youth, giving timeless poetry a fresh vitality. International audiences are drawn to the beauty of Chinese culture while finding universal points of resonance in these coming-of-age themes.

Equally significant is the innovative creative process. The children were not only performers but also collaborators in directing, scriptwriting, composing, and choreography. This participatory approach unleashed their astonishing imagination and originality, filling the work with playfulness, authenticity, and contemporary spirit. The playful narrative structure—turning games into storytelling devices—further blurs the boundary between audience and performer, amplifying immersion.

With “Chinese expression” as its guiding principle, the production successfully balances artistic excellence with cultural consciousness. It showcases the poetic allure of Chinese tradition while speaking in a modern, cross-cultural theatrical language that international audiences can engage with.

On the surface, the story depicts a troupe in chaos after their teacher’s departure interrupts their graduation play. At a deeper level, it reflects universal challenges of growing up: friendship tested, freedom desired, dreams pursued, relationships negotiated, peace imagined. These themes transcend cultural boundaries, creating a global dialogue through a child’s perspective.

Youth and Poetry – The Book of Songs is more than a children’s show—it is a cross-cultural fable of growth and imagination. By revitalising ancient classics through the creativity of children, it not only preserves cultural heritage but also demonstrates the universal power of youth voices. Its award is a recognition of both artistic achievement and the work’s extraordinary potential for international exchange.

Synopsis

The Book of Songs is the earliest anthology of poetry in ancient China and one of the most important sources of Chinese literature. The children of the theater troupe carefully selected fourteen poems from the vast and magnificent chapters of The Book of Songs that reflect their current lives and states. These fourteen poems also connect the dilemmas and confusions they face while growing up—friendship, freedom, dreams, relationships, peace, and more... In the process of creation, the children raise questions and, through that same creativity, find solutions. Within this story, which appears to be simply about the interruption of their graduation play The Book of Songs due to the departure of their theater teacher, the artists collaborate closely to create an absolutely safe environment for the children’s boundless imagination and playfulness to flourish.
