2026 IC Award Winners Officially Announced at Edinburgh Festival Fringe
Crossing Mountains and Seas, Finally Seeing Glory
Artists from around the world gathered at Edinburgh's Fringe Festival, where diverse artistic visions converged and collided in a celebration of cross-cultural expression.
The IC Award (Intercultural Connections Award), hosted by the Intercultural Connections Initiative (ICI), established a showcase and awards space at King's Hall. This year, over 100 productions from more than 30 countries applied enthusiastically. The awards are open to stage works from around the globe, encouraging artistic creations that demonstrate cross-cultural thinking and dare to push the boundaries of expression, paying tribute to the exploration and practice of creators from around the world.
IC Award Categories
Future Generation Award β Established for student creators, focusing on the artistic intuition and growth potential of young theatre talent currently in school, dedicated to discovering and nurturing the next generation of stage art pioneers. Selected artists will receive professional mentorship, international youth arts platform resources, and opportunities to participate in international exchange programs.
Personal Achievement Award β Honoring artists who have demonstrated outstanding artistic achievements and significant individual influence in the field of theatrical creation, encompassing diverse creative identities including performance, playwriting, and directing.
Pioneer Award β Recognizing cutting-edge works that courageously break through in theatrical language, performance forms, and aesthetic concepts, with strong experimental spirit. The award encourages creators to challenge traditional narrative frameworks and stage boundaries.
Best Production Award β For complete theatrical works with high artistic completion, mature stage expressiveness, and potential for international touring. This award recognizes works with excellent narrative construction, visual presentation, and overall execution.
The 2026 IC Award Ceremony
The 2026 IC Award International Cultural Exchange Awards Ceremony was grandly held on the evening of August 26 at King's Hall in Edinburgh. Hosted by the Intercultural Connections Initiative (ICI), the event brought together work creators, festival judging guests, cross-cultural scholars, and partner representatives, all gathering to witness this moment of honor for global stage creators.
At the ceremony, the judging panel delivered concluding remarks on the overall standard and artistic exploration direction of this year's works, giving high recognition to the bold attempts in cross-cultural expression by creators from different countries and cultural backgrounds.
After multiple rounds of careful selection and final verification by the judging panel, the four major award categories have been officially announced.

π Future Generation Award
Winning Work: AFRONAUTS
Performance Team: CIRCUS ZAMBIA AND WAKE THE BEAST
The work is adapted from Zambia's true but little-known "space program" that occurred in 1964. Dreamer Edward Mukuka Nkoloso attempted to send African astronauts into space; the team even included a young girl, two cats, and a missionary. Circus, theatre, and aerial skills combined to tell a story about courage, imagination, and the audacity to dream.

Winning Artist: CHEEYANG NG
Performance Work: LEGENDARY
A solo ritual musical that combines Chinese mythology, memory, and queer identity. Cheeyang Ng re-examines family, tradition, and the stories that shaped them yet never truly "reflected" themselves through ancient myths like Pangu and NΓΌwa, and shared singing, turning the narrative toward the joy, self-affirmation, and creation within queer identity.

Artist: TAMSIN SHASHA
A high-energy mother with ADHD collides head-on with her video-game-obsessed son on the autism spectrum. The work starts from intergenerational neurodiversity, using a personal solo performance that blends pole technique, video, song, and game mechanics to tell a story of conflict, misunderstanding, and gradually building mutual understanding.

Artist/Team: THE FREESTYLE ORCHESTRA
A musical drama that blends violin concerto, contemporary circus, fire performance, dance, and physical theatre. Centered on the legend of the phoenix rising from the ashes, the work tells a story of resistance, death, and renewal, transforming "rebirth" into a contemporary expression of hope and life resilience.
