Edinburgh, August 25, 2023 — The Intercultural Connections Initiative (ICI) proudly hosted the inaugural Chinese Culture Week (CCW) as part of the renowned Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Running from August 16 to 25, this major cultural initiative marked a significant gesture of cultural communication, showcasing the richness of Chinese heritage to an international audience through a variety of offline and online activities.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, celebrated as one of the world’s largest and most prestigious arts festivals, welcomed the Chinese Culture Week as a special feature this year. This initiative was a vibrant display of Chinese art and culture, demonstrating ICI’s commitment to fostering global cultural exchange.

The week kicked off with an impressive performance by the Edinburgh Chinese Folk Music Orchestra, setting the stage for a series of culturally enriching events. Highlights included martial arts demonstrations by the Henan Provincial Martial Arts School and Tai Chi exhibitions led by “World Taiji Ambassador” Yue Liming. The Kunshan Hundred- Opera Festival also made a notable appearance, presenting classic Kunqu opera performances like The Washing of the Silk Gauze and Hujia Village. The festival featured innovative cultural products such as opera-themed blind boxes and artistic fans.

Further enriching the program, the Guizhou Wudance Troupe transported audiences to the picturesque landscapes of Guizhou with their captivating dance performances. The Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Troupe delighted attendees with their rendition of Five Daughters Paying Homage to Their Mother. Additionally, the film Medicine, directed by Wang Feng, offered a modern twist on the classic play Thunderstorm, showcasing China’s evolving stage art.

A standout feature of the week was the “Empowering Her” symposium, where international female artists shared their insights and experiences, highlighting the role of women in the arts. The week’s activities seamlessly blended traditional and contemporary elements, breaking down barriers and providing a comprehensive view of Chinese culture.

Utilizing cutting-edge digital technology through the “Cloud Theatre,” CCW brought Chinese stage art to a global audience with high-definition screenings, achieving significant success. The “Cloud Theatre” hosted continuous screenings for three days, garnering enthusiastic feedback from viewers.

The event received widespread media coverage and positive responses from international audiences, many of whom expressed a desire to visit China to experience its cultural richness firsthand. The success of Chinese Culture Week underscores ICI’s dedication to enhancing cultural understanding and international collaboration.

ICI is excited about the future of CCW and its potential to become a prominent cultural brand, reflecting China’s growing cultural influence and its role in the global cultural dialogue. This initiative not only celebrated Chinese culture but also set the stage for further cultural exchanges and partnerships worldwide.
